Sample synthesized at 24 GPa and 1600°C for 3.5 hours in the MgO-SiO2-H2O system using a multianvil apparatus. Because of the thermal gradient, the two polymorphs of MgSiO3, perovskite, the high-temperature phase, and akimotoite (ilmenite-type structure), the low-temperature phase, were synthesised. This type of sample enables the partition coefficient of water between magnesium silicate perovskite (Pv) and akimotoite (Akim) to be measured, which places constraints on the distribution of water in the Earth's mantle.
